One more International Conference on: "Photosynthesis Research for Sustainability- in honor of George C. Papageorgiou", closed with success at the Orthodox Academy of Crete which took place from 21 to 26 September 2015). The Conference is held every two years and is in honor of eminent scientists of Photosynthesis. The Conference was attended by scientists all over the world to honor Dr. George C. Papageorgiou. They included A. Melis (Berkeley, USA), Jian-Ren Shen (Okayama, Japan), N. Murata (Okazaki, Japan), Govindjee (Illinois, USA), J. Barber (Imperial, England), P. Nixon ( Imperial, England), Suleyman Allakhverdiev (Russia).
Dr. George Papageorgiou, prominent member of the scientific community of NCSR "Demokritos", was for many years Director of the Institute of Biology (Today Institute for Biosciences and Applications). His continuous scientific involvement (over 40 years) in Photosynthesis issues make him as one of the most well-known ambassadors of NCSR "Demokritos" in the global research community.
The conference was attended by approximately 140 participants and held more than 100 lectures.
Photosynthesis is the process by which solar energy is converted to the two essential elements for the survival of plants and other organisms; food and the oxygen of our breath. The study of photosynthesis requires the collaboration of scientists from the field of Physics, Chemistry and of course Biology.
